Joe Levine is a Principal in the NYC firm of Bone/Levine Architects.
The firm is involved with urban infastructure upgrading and rehabilitation, conservation easement planning and is a consultant to the Cooper Union Institute for Sustainable Design.
He is the co-founder and Director of NYH2O and Damascus Citizens for Sustainability, two grass roots nonprofit organizations dedicated to educating the public about the danger of unconventional natural gas extraction.
NYH2O and Damascus Citizens for Sustainability are sister organizations, focused on our Catskill/Delaware Watershed.
This meeting is timely because on November 30, there is a public hearing at Borough of Manhattan Community College for New Yorker’s to comment on the rdSGEIS and the regulations the NYS Dept of Environmental Conservation released – with only a 90 day public comment period – which ends on December 12, 2011. Fracking for gas could happen after that.
If the gas extraction industry prevails, they will begin drilling the first of what could ultimately be tens of thousands of wells in the Catskill/Delaware Watershed. The now pristine waters that flow unfiltered to more than 9 million New Yorkers would be laced with a toxic brew of chemicals associated with deep shale gas drilling. Once these chemicals find their way into a water supply, they are nearly impossible to filter out. The solution is simple — prevention. This is the mission of NYH2O — to prevent the polluting gas extraction activities that threaten New York’s water resources.
